Felipe Saffie is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration in the Global Economies and Markets area. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. His research belong to the intersection of international finance, firm dynamics and economic growth. Methodologically, he combines empirical work with quantitative theory using granular data to understand aggregate phenomena. He has studied classical topic on international finance using micro data from emerging markets, like the effect of financial crises in productivity (Chile), the transmission of commodity fluctuations through the economy (Brazil), and the effects of financial liberalizations on the allocation of resources (Hungary). From a domestic perspective, he has studied the effects of the US-China trade war on US labor markets and exports. His research also spans the political influence of firms in US policy and its effects on the allocation of resources. Before joining Darden in 2020, he was an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland.
