Darden’s engagement in China and East Asia runs deep, with support on the ground from the UVA China Office in Shanghai's Xuhui District, regular student programming, an active alumni network, events, and thought leadership led by the Asia Initiative.

Courses in China

Students in Darden's full-time MBA and Executive MBA formats participate in courses and global residencies in China, organized by Darden's Center for Global Initiatives. Class of 2020 Executive MBA student Candie Jones described her experiences in Shanghai and Beijing in the Global Voices of Darden blog.

Faculty Research

Darden Professor Dennis Yang is academic director of the Asia Initiative. His research focuses primarily on economic development and growth, as well as labor economics, especially in the context of China and economic transition.

Chinese Students at Darden

Students with international backgrounds make up roughly a third of Darden's full-time MBA class and play a vital role in the classroom and student life. The Asia Business Club at Darden hosted the School's first-ever Asia Week, which shares a comprehensive view of Asia from economic, cultural, art and lifestyle perspectives.

Ongoing Events in East Asia

Global Content in the Classroom

Global content is infused throughout the Darden curriculum. For example, just as Shanghai Disney Resort was opening its doors in China's most populous city, Darden Professor Elliott Weiss presented a Darden case to examine if Disney's magic would catch in the Shanghai market and the historical performance of Disney's parks in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris.

Meet UVA's First Chinese Student
