The Office of the Registrar provides information and forms to cover MBA credit for a non-Darden course, overload requests, independent studies and consulting & venturing projects.

  • MBA Credit for a Non-Darden Course

MBA Credit for a Non-Darden Course

University of Virginia courses outside the Darden School are offered for credit to students under the following conditions:

    • The course is a graduate-level offering and has been approved by the chair of the MBA Program Committee.
    • Degree credit will be given for no more than two courses (six hours) outside Darden.
    • The course does not present a scheduling conflict with a Darden course.
    • Preapproved non-Darden courses include:
SARC 5500-001 Special Topics: Water Sustainability (3 credit hours, Architecture)
GNUR 5030 Leading with Presence in Health Care (2 credit hours) meets the SY Leadership (LDSP) requirement

If the course you wish to take is not on the preapproved list, you may submit a request for MBA credit to be applied to the course.

    Process

    1. Complete the MBA Credit for a Non-Darden Course Request Form and submit it as an attachment to the Darden Registrar's office. We will notify you of the decision.
    2. Submit documentation showing faculty approval to enroll in the non-Darden course to Darden Registrar's office
    3. The Darden Registrar’s office will coordinate with the School offering the course to enroll you in SIS.

    Additional Rules & Regulations

    • Dual degree students interested in taking outside courses should consult the Second Year (SY) Course Rules before proceeding. Contact the Registrar's office for assistance.
    • Darden students cannot receive degree credit for Pass/Fail and/or Credit/No Credit courses.
    • The school that offers the course determines the grading symbols that will be assigned to students. Darden grade symbols are different from those used at other schools.
    • Students cannot graduate with an incomplete or missing grade. Spring Law School grades are normally not posted until mid-to-late June. See the Darden Registrar for more details.
  • Overload Request

    Overload Request

In rare, special circumstances, it may be possible to take more than 30 credit hours in the SY. It is our experience that students taking an overload have difficulty finding the time and energy required to reap the full benefit of the program. However, there are situations in which a student's career plans make taking an overload desirable. Therefore, permission to take an overload may be granted on a limited basis to students with both compelling career-oriented reasons and the demonstrated ability to handle a heavier-than-recommended workload. Note that if granted, overloads must be carried through Graduation.

    Process

Submit an overload request form to the Darden Registrar's office. We will notify you of the decision.

    Rules and Regulations

    • Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 30 SY credit hours in order to request an overload.
    • The earliest a student can submit an overload request is 8 a.m. on the first day of classes for that particular quarter. Requests submitted before that date and time will not be considered. The latest a student can submit an overload is 4:30 p.m. on the day of the drop/add deadline.
    • Students cannot submit an overload request if adding the course creates a schedule conflict.
    • Students will be manually enrolled in the overload course the day after the drop/add deadline for that particular quarter if there is capacity and will be notified when they have been added. Students will be enrolled based on the time and date on the request. If there are more students that want to take the course as an overload than there is capacity, the students will be enrolled based on the time and date of the submission.
    • Students are expected to attend the course they wish to take as an overload.
    • Student requests for more than 31.5 credits will be considered after those requests have been satisfied for that particular course.
    • Students who wish to request an overload for a January or March one-week course can do so the day after the drop/add deadline for the one-week course.
    • Students under the jurisdiction of the Academic Standards Committee (ASC) are not approved for overloads.
  • Independent Study

    Independent Study

A course of study for students with special interests, an Independent Study (IS) is conducted by students under the supervision of a Darden faculty member. These are intended to allow students to study topics not covered in existing Darden courses. Students must be in their second year to be eligible to apply for an independent study.

In the application form, a student will:

    • Describe a set of academic learning outcomes for the study.
    • Indicate a set of activities that would reasonably be expected to achieve the learning outcomes.
    • Describe a set of deliverables that would enable a faculty member to evaluate whether the learning outcomes were achieved.

Note: Learning objectives are not activities but the learning that would be achieved from a set of activities. Also, the learning outcomes need to be of a scale that is comparable to a regular course granting similar credit hours.

Before applying, please remember that Independent Study is an elective that has degree credit hour restriction:

    • Residential MBA: No more than 4.5 credits of Independent Study credits can be applied toward Graduation;
    • Executive MBA Program: No more than 3 credits of Directed Study credits can be can be applied toward Graduation.

To request permission to take an Independent Study:

The deadline to submit an Independent Study proposal is one week before the last day to add/drop in the quarter for which you are applying.

Once your proposal has been approved, you will be notified by email. Because registration is by permission only, the Registrar’s Office will manually add the course to your quarter enrollment.
